Voice over IP makes communication easier and cheaper

It is often said that advancement in communication technology has shrank the world. While this statement is true, it needs to be modified a little. The credit for shrinking the world does not go only to the communication technology, but also to the advancement in the field of IT. Essentially, it is the advancement in the convergence of technologies rather than their isolated development in their respective areas which is to be held responsible for this shrinking of the world. This is testified by the voice over IP technology.

VOIP services as these are called in short, have been made possible by the convergence of communication and internet technologies. What is VOIP? Voice over internet protocol is a way of communicating with the others by making use of the software which can be run on computers or mobiles and by using high bandwidth internet connectivity. Using it, you would be able to communicate with the people free of cost or at a fraction of cost of the traditional telephonic methods. You are required to download and install the program on the computer or the mobile and get connected to the internet for communicating with the others.

VOIP has many benefits, which can be summed up below:

1.Allows for making free and cheaper long distance calls. The rates are a fraction of the costs involved through the traditional medium.

2.VOIP services are not just about voice communication. It allows for multiple ways of communication. You can do chatting with the people (send them I.M.), send SMS to mobiles of people, do group chatting or video conferencing, etc.

3.It also comes with additional features like call holding, diverting, barring or forwarding. You can even transfer files from computer to the other person and make adjustments or changes to the various functionalities.

4. Business VOIP services are especially helpful in managing multi-location communications among the employees. Some of the businesses make extensive use of VOIP services. These are the ones which have to deal with international clients, or the ones which are required to communicate frequently with distant employees. Some of the businesses are based on VOIP exclusively, like the call centre or the BPO operations.

5.The VOIP services can be had in different ways. You can use the computers based software to communicate, if you are working on computers. You can even attach the VOIP phone to the system to make it more convenient to receive or make calls. Even the Cordless phones can be used which can obviate the need for keep sitting at one place. If you are on the move, but are connected to the WLAN, or through the mobile internet service provider, then you can use the mobiles loaded with the VOIP software to make or take the calls.

6.Contributes to environmental improvement: If it were not for the VOIP phone services, people would have moved or traveled around more leading to greater stress on the fuel resources and contributing to environmental deterioration.

Smallbusinessphonesystem is a writer who frequently writes about services such as:- Business VOIP, VOIP services & Cordless phones.

Internet Telephony: Improvised Conventional Phone Service

In today’s world, internet is playing a vital role in changing people’s thinking and lifestyle. These changes came into existence with the innovation in technology and advancement. Well, credit for this revolution is given to internet. While talking about technology in communication industry, internet has come up with advanced communication that allows user to handle long distance and international calls at substantial rates. Thus, internet telephony is considered as a popular and widely used for accessing internet applications. The reason for its popularity that has made PSTN user to switch on to advanced VoIP telephony is increase in productivity and cost efficiency.

While calling through IP telephony, user can save his pounds as it is based on packet switching protocol that allows the user to share data, voice, video or images through single line. Thus, through advanced calling, user can communicate with other user irrespective of locality and mobility.

The latest VoIP telephony is a combination of conventional phone services and high speed internet. It allows user to make and receive all calls at cheaper rates without any hurdle in setup of VoIP services. For making calls through voice over ip telephony, user needs ATA (analog voice adaptor), internet connection and telephone for calling his friend or relative. VoIP phone service allows user to use his broadband connection to place telephone calls over the Internet. Though, this technology is rocking the telecom industry to the core.

The major advantage of VoIP telephony includes lower cost, greater flexibility, scalability, functionality, network efficiency and above all security. Apart from this, telephony satisfies the voice quality. On calling through VoIP, user enjoys unlimited incoming and long distance calls to anyone across the global village. User must opt for those VoIP providers who offers free voicemail, call forwarding, caller ID, call waiting, call waiting ID, 3 way calling and speed dialling. Voice over IP?

Question by Tasm: Voice over IP?
I want to create a program to do voice over ip where multiple clients can connect. What language would I use, anyone have a code example?

Best answer:

Answer by Skotos
You could use almost any language that has support for TCP/IP and/or UDP. I think the most commonly used language right now is Java, but you can also do so in C# and C++.

I’m not sure how you’d go about recording audio (as I’ve never had to do that), but you’d probably want to setup one application as the server for all of the other clients to connect to. Then when the server receives an audio packet(s), it can distribute them to the clients.

Of course, it’s all easier said than done. =)

Have fun!

VoIP Phone System Revealed

Voice Over Internet Protocol are also referred to as broadband phones.  The primary function of a broadband phone using VoIP is to convert voice data (analog) into digital data for transmission over the web.  They’re connected to a high speed web through computers to enable voice communication.  Through this innovation, VoIP phone systems have turned the internet into a carrier for free phone calls, by going around traditional phone companies.

VoIP phone systems are a product of revolutionary technology that can change the whole manner by which people speak to one another around the world.  There are some VoIP service providers that are growing daily and major phone companies are busy setting shop in various markets around the world with completely different calling plans with free VoIP phones bundled in.  FCC and other regulatory bodies around the globe are fervently busy investigating and predicting the ramifications and future VoIP risks and how to prevent them.

We will look into the basic technology of VoIP phones systems working and its potential in replacing the traditional phone systems.

The most intriguing feature of VoIP phones is that they appear just like their predecessors; with cradle, buttons, and handsets.  A normal telephone is connected to a wall socket using RJ-11 connector, whereas VoIP phone systems are connected to your computer or router using RJ-45 connectors.  All VoIP phones come with preloaded software to handle any IP calls.  Technology is already moving towards WiFi VoIP phone systems that used to make calls from any WiFi hotspot.

In addition to the usage of VoIP phones, VoIP can also use ATA sets, i.e. simple telephone-like boxes that connect to your computer and convert your analog voice data into digital signals.  VoIP also connects computer to computer calls where you do not need any additional hardware apart from a standard computer system with headphones and an internet connection.  Aside from what you pay for, your internet connection, there’s not extra costs involved.  VoIP phone systems are dedicated instruments used solely for make calls over VoIP.

If you want the features of a VoIP phone system, you can sample free versions on the internet to test the connectivity and sound quality.  One place that allows this is to use the latest version of Yahoo Messenger, version 7.0, which is Voice-enabled.  You’ll be able to make computer to computer calls using yahoo messenger.  It’s very easy to install; just simply try it out.  One other place is Skype.com.  VoIP broadband phones are definitely here to stay despite the internet sops and other devices available.

If you’re into making long distance calls, you could be involuntarily making VoIP calls without using a VoIP phone system and at normal prices.  Most phone companies around the world are trying to scale back their bandwidth by routing a few thousand calls through their circuit switches onto an IP gateway.  On the receiving end, they just reverse the process, somewhat similar to multiplexing.

Given some time, all current phone technology that involves circuit switched networks will be replaced by packet switching technology.  VoIP technology is costs less and requires less infrastructure and is more efficient. VoIP phones have made their way into most corporate houses, it’s only a matter of time before they come into our homes.

VoIP phone systems score on the basis of cost and flexibility.  It can be said that they’re free to use, unless you use your broadband connection only for your VoIP phone system.  You can virtually call from anywhere in the world where you can access the internet.  You can carry your VoIP phone anywhere you use your laptop to make PC to PC calls.

VoIP companies are offering rate plans similar to cellular phones for customers who are interested in VoIP phone systems.  The cost will vary depending on which carrier you select.  They are also offering a lot of freebies including free VoIP phones to go with their phone system.  This helps to make the usage of a VoIP phone system even more economical.

VoIP phone systems are easy to use.   Find out how you can get your own VoIP phone service.
