VoIP Basic Tidbits

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is the transmission of voice information over IP-based networks or the Internet. It involves delivery of voice information in digital form, such as fax, SMS, and/or voice-messaging applications, in separate packets instead of the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network. You are able to make and receive voice calls just as long as you have broadband Internet connection. The main advantage of VoIP is the low cost since you can bid goodbye to high fees charged by ordinary telephone service.

The Internet Protocol or IP was originally used for data networking. The achievement of IP in being a worldwide standard for data networking has made possible for its adaption to voice networking.

Other VoIP services can only permit you to call other people using the same service, but some will let you call anyone who has a telephone number. VoIP lets you make a call straight from your computer, a special VoIP phone, or a regular phone connected to a special adapter. If the person on the other end has a standard analog phone, that person does not need any special tools to talk to you. Some VoIP services even let you speak to more than one person at a time.

Other terms frequently encountered and often used in the same way with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), and broadband phone.

VoIP calls are made through the use of Internet. Many Internet connections are charged via flat monthly fee deals. Additionally, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long distance calls and that is the reason why people are all raves about it.

To avail of the services of VoIP, you should at least have a broadband (high speed Internet) connection. This can be through a cable modem, or high speed services such as DSL or a local area network. A computer, adaptor, or specialized phone is necessary.

VoIP Service Is Best Because?

At the present, the most used and perhaps most abused form of technology is the internet. The internet or the world wide web speaks a lot for itself. It takes each and every part of the planet into on circle where they can communicate and interact. In the past, the internet could only be accessed by the rich and powerful. However, due to insistent public demand, the luxury became a necessity. This is now available for everyone from all walks of life and from all ages.

Speaking of internet and technology, both are continuously going through developments. As they say, change is the only constant thing in the world. And the change they are experiencing are all for the better. One of the greatest features of the internet is the ability to serve as a vehicle for communication. A lot of ways are offered such as through instant messaging, social networking sites and a whole lot more. These things have readily replaced the traditional handwritten letters sent via courier that takes about two to three days to arrive. With internet, the email you sent will be received in just a few seconds. Yes, it is like faster than a speeding bullet with no exaggerations added.

With the ever growing world of technology, it still manages to add a touch of the past. Besides, what was then made the now possible. Which is why, software providers created a new communication system that makes use of the conventional telephone technology with the internet communication technology. Collectively, it is called VoIP.

VoIP offers call waiting, fax and answering machine, caller identification and conference calls the same as that of the traditional telephone. It can be used to place calls on mobile phones, long distance calls and to a similar traditional telephone. As expected, a VoIP phone can call another VoIP phone for free as long as they are both subscribed in the same VoIP service provider. One can also do video conference with the use of a webcam.

It does not matter where you use VoIP phones because it is best for home and as well as in businesses. It is uncomplicated and the same as the phone you are used to using, only this one is a whole lot better.

An Introduction to VoIP

VoIP or Voice-over IP refers to the communication of people between IP addresses over the Internet. It was first utilized in the year 1995 as a substitute for the telephone. It works by converting a voice signal into a digital signal. Then, it travels over the Internet as data.

Afterwards, it converts back into a voice signal to the other end. There are different ways to use VoIP.  The first is to make use of a microphone plugged into the computer. You can also use a phone adapter or VoIP phone (the phone adapter refers to a device that converts your telephone signal so that it can be useful for VoIP calls). VoIP phones are the same with telephones, but they are mainly for VoIP calls. You can also use a regular telephone with VoIP.

VoIP is less costly compared to a regular telephone. This is because you use computers and the IP addresses, so there’s no longer a need for a telephone line to be installed. This will spare you time and money. The cost is the leverage of VoIP over regular telephones. You can save a lot on long distance calls. Because of the technology used, a long distance call costs the same as a local call. Businesses are also able to save a sizeable amount of money by using VoIP.

Because VoIP calls have to be converted into a digital signal and then back into a voice signal, there could be a slight time delay. Another disadvantage is that the voice quality may not be as clear as a regular telephone. But the technology is continually improving, and both these drawbacks are being enhanced.

The future is looking good for VoIP. More and more people seem to be taking interest in it (both personal and businesses) and this trend is not going to stop anytime soon. It may not have the same quality with a regular telephone, but it never ceases to improve.

What are the pros and cons on internet telephone service?

Question by Let there be JIMBO: What are the pros and cons on internet telephone service?
My company is thinking to switch to a new phone provider that uses VOIP technology. It’s voice + data so conversations, they claim, are very clear. Does anybody have any knowledge of this?
It’s similar to Vonage, but I guess it’s more high quality?

Hey Jimbo,  I know about this.  My company just went with VoIP.  The only problem we seem to have is if someone calls you from a cell phone sometimes cuts in and out.  People also sound “far away” but not all of the time.  The VoIP phones we got have caller ID and tons of rings to choose from.  You can also delete the message from your email before you even have to listen to it (I am guilty of this.)  It will save your company a ton of money too, but I doubt they will pass the benefits on to the employees.. Most companies do not.
