What are the pros and cons on internet telephone service?

Question by Let there be JIMBO: What are the pros and cons on internet telephone service?
My company is thinking to switch to a new phone provider that uses VOIP technology. It’s voice + data so conversations, they claim, are very clear. Does anybody have any knowledge of this?
It’s similar to Vonage, but I guess it’s more high quality?

Hey Jimbo,  I know about this.  My company just went with VoIP.  The only problem we seem to have is if someone calls you from a cell phone sometimes cuts in and out.  People also sound “far away” but not all of the time.  The VoIP phones we got have caller ID and tons of rings to choose from.  You can also delete the message from your email before you even have to listen to it (I am guilty of this.)  It will save your company a ton of money too, but I doubt they will pass the benefits on to the employees.. Most companies do not.

VoIP can take a significant chunk out of your internet bandwidth, and if it is unstable/slow, you might get poor quality/connectivity; however, on a corporate level, the upgrades to the internet, the new hardware, etc., is almost always justified by the large amount of money saved within a few years.

It might be prudent to note that in the case of a power outage, your phones would be rendered useless, which is often not the case with POTS, as the phone is powered through the phone line, though most people are completely dependent upon wireless receivers nowadays, which rely on a power source. But an “old school” phone is still useful for emergencies when using a POTS.
