Q&A: VOIP – Voice Over Internet Protocol; how reliable is this communication solution?

Question by Shaula Brandt: VOIP – Voice Over Internet Protocol; how reliable is this communication solution?
For the company I work, I am looking into possible new communication services. I have heard of VOIP, but I would like to hear from someone who has experienced it to know what to expect. Is this solution reliable and worth the investment. I am told we would have to replace all our current phones, but the cost savings for the services would pay for the investment in the first year.

VOIP works very well as long as you have an internet connection. If your internet connection goes down, your phones will also not work. I have seen this become a major issue in the past.

Performance Evaluation of Voice Over Internet Protocol Reviews

Performance Evaluation of Voice Over Internet Protocol

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA DEPT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A875114. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) was developed to emulate toll services with lower communication cost. In VoIP applications, voices are digitized and packetized into small blocks. These voice blocks are encapsulated in a sequence of voice packets using the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) and delivered by the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). To help VoIP applications deal with unpredictable network performance, the Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP) is developed to monitor the performance of RTP packets and provide feedback to the VoIP applications. The feedback on packet delay, jitter, and loss rate enables the applications to adapt to network conditions to maintain a certain level of voice quality. With this architecture, the quality of service of VoIP relies on the effectiveness of the RTCP network performance report mechanism. This research collects RTCP performance reports from live traffic over real networks and compares their values with the statistics derived from direct measurements of RTP packets to evaluate the effectiveness of RTCP. The live experiments were conducted on networks resembling respectively, Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), campus network, and encrypted wireless LAN. Results from these experiments show that RTCP is effective for low delay networks but RTCP performance reports can be inaccurate for networks with large, volatile delays.

Voice over Internet Protocol ? Altering the way the World Communicates

It may seem like jumping into the dark but switching to a Voice over Internet Protocol telephone system, VOIP, is very simple. VOIP offers changes that can be detailed and many. These changes can be very beneficial to users who choose VOIP vendors such as Yahoo Messenger or Vonage. The world is using the phone differently thanks to VOIP.

Users should know what kind of service they wish to use before buying a new VOIP phone system. To choose the VOIP vendor that is right for you, you must compare every aspect of the services offered. If most calls being made are long distance, plans like Vonage or Skype might be helpful since they offer great long distance features. It is typical for VOIP services not to charge for long distance. This is especially the case between users on the same service. Long distance users can really benefit from establishing a network of this sort.

Lots of Voice over Internet Protocol services have a flat-rate monthly fee service. This plan lets users make unlimited calls. It is a good idea to compare services to get the greatest amount of features for your monthly fee. If a service only offers the bare minimum in features, you may want to pay a little more and get more services. For about a month, you can get a very simple package that will give you unlimited calling. This kind of deal may cause you to lose out on a lot of the great benefits inherent in VOIP.

Traditional phone services simply do not offer all the features you will find with broadband calling. VOIP offers features like emergency directory assistance numbers, call blocking, voicemail, caller ID, last number redial, call forwarding, local number portability, call waiting, and fax redirect.  Really, you can get all of the features that are typical with a traditional phone company. Of course, these services are all offered with VOIP, but a lot of companies offer additional features like selecting your area code anywhere in the world, multi-ring features for calls that come while you are on another a call, global travel without long distance rates, instant connectivity to hot spots allowing you to connect with other VOIP users internationally in any internet capable area, and great back and forth connectivity with a personal computer to phone option. Additionally, full sets of contact lists can be stored on a removable hard drive.

Users who make lots of international calls may find that VOIP is just the missing piece they have been looking for. VOIP really gives lots of features to their users. This helps them to be worldwide leaders in communications at the very start of this venture. People who use VOIP services are happy with them. They say that these great services really support them in communicating around the world. Users report few, if any, problems. You don’t need to worry about VOIP disappearing.

Private electronics consultant, Cameron Tacassi knows the importance of using the proper chip inductor to help speed performance of VOIP systems as well as a custom transformer to achieve the best possible result. Cameron relies on Allied Components for his communication hardware needs.

Can anyone argue for or against VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) versus standard phone service.?

Question by Harlan B: Can anyone argue for or against VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) versus standard phone service.?
Do I save money by routing phone calls through the Internet. Do I have to use my laptop and a headset to answer or make calls or can we pick up any phone in the house and make and answer calls? Is the technology to new to even consider now? I am confused.

What Are The Functions of Voice Over Internet Protocol?

When it comes to VOIP, it is a faster transmission of voice through IP network. It is applied in many areas as modern and advanced technology. It is of great advantage to the businessmen simply because of its cost-effective nature as compared to the traditional IP networks. It does not charge any fee on the long distance communication made since there is a flat monthly fee making possible for many to access this service adequately. The location of an individual does not affect his or her communication needed since the service provider ensures there is an adequate service to the customers and the charge is cheaper as compared to the traditional networks. In session initiation protocol (SIP) this system is applied.

Due to high technologies, there are new ones, which are less complex and many people are demanding for them hence increase in its market. The VOIP service provider has utilized the existing broadband, the internet, and it enables the subscribers to place and receive telephone calls very easily and efficiently. The companies which deal the system give offers to the customers who are unlimited calls with a flat monthly subscription fee. This system gives the customers or the users an advantage because with it one can just connect to the service provider since only some few implementations.

VOIP is truly commonly used by a large population, especially in the telecommunication since it can connect to the other telephony network’s providers. Therefore, it is not restricted to a specific network. Many users prefer this type of system over the traditional one because it takes the efficient of the cost and this cost effectiveness is brought by the ability of the system to use the broadband width. This also enables the businesses to make use of it and rely on it highly. The business person will change the use of the copper wires for the connectivity as the telephone wires which in turn reduces the cost of infrastructure and the monthly costs. This system can be used to deliver communication services to any handset, for example, the phones as calls and email.

With the system voice communication, it is very easy to be made and the data communication was created using a single network. As a result, it may turn leads to a reduction of the costs of setting up the infrastructure such as the copper cable wires. With this system, the extension prices are low which one of the benefits among others is. VOIP avoids the problem of separating the data networks and the voice networks. This system can transmit more than one telephone call over single broadband connections.

And also, this system is capable of securing the calls in a very standard protocol which is applying the digital transmission. The network is very strong and functions independent since the location of the user does not matter on the ability and access to the service. Integration with the services is done, for example, the messaging and the video conversation. It has a unified communication which involves the integration with the business system, including email, web system and customer relationship.

What is the difference between IPT (Internet Protocol Telephone) and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)?

Question by coder: What is the different between IPT (Internet Protocol Telephone) and VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)?

Best answer:

Answer by ryu
Voice over Internet Protocol is a protocol meant for the transmission of voice through the Internet or other packet switched networks like LAN or WAN. VoIP differs from IP telephone in the sense that VoIP actually transmits voice rather than the protocol implementing it.
In IP telephony or Internet Telephony….u may call it broadband also..here the voice is actually broken down into bits and bytes and by techniques known as multiplexing and demultiplexing they actually tranmsit voice across the internet …so the basic difference being the method in which both of them transmit voice..
