What are the pros and cons on internet telephone service?

Question by Let there be JIMBO: What are the pros and cons on internet telephone service?
My company is thinking to switch to a new phone provider that uses VOIP technology. It’s voice + data so conversations, they claim, are very clear. Does anybody have any knowledge of this?
It’s similar to Vonage, but I guess it’s more high quality?

Hey Jimbo,  I know about this.  My company just went with VoIP.  The only problem we seem to have is if someone calls you from a cell phone sometimes cuts in and out.  People also sound “far away” but not all of the time.  The VoIP phones we got have caller ID and tons of rings to choose from.  You can also delete the message from your email before you even have to listen to it (I am guilty of this.)  It will save your company a ton of money too, but I doubt they will pass the benefits on to the employees.. Most companies do not.

Why does my cable internet shut off when the phone rings?

Question by thephilliesarenotstopable: Why does my cable internet shut off when the phone rings?
My family has cable internet. The cable comes from the wall, then goes to the modem, and then goes to the wireless-N router. A cord also comes from the router to the desktop PC it is near. The wireless network works fine normally. here is the problem, whenever the home phone rings or is used, the internet goes down and cannot be used until the phone is no longer in use. What is the cause of this problem and what are possible solutions?

From your setup, I can’t tell if you have DSL or cable internet. If this is DSL through your telephone company, it sounds like you either have a bad filter or connection outside, and the low frequency voice portion is bleeding into your high-frequency DSL, which is resetting your connection, or you have a cordless phone that is operating on the same frequency as your wireless router. Most new routers have a solution for this by altering the broadcast frequency of your wireless.

What all voip, etc. carriers do phone number portability?

Question by dhampton82: What all voip, etc. carriers do phone number portability?
My dad has had the same home phone number since like 1978. He now wants to try out a voip or similar to try to save some cash. However, he says that it is not an option unless he can take his number with him. Please let me know who all will let him take his number as far as internet phone companies go!

Answer by S
Number portability is what your talking about. You need to ask the VoIP provider if your POTS number is portable to their VoIP system. Some are and some aren’t.

Q&A: What is wrong with my internet connection?

Question by Oika: What is wrong with my internet connection?
I already check in with my provider so everything is being supplied as it’s supposed to be but I can’t video or voice chat. I am theoretically able to do that, but it starts and stops, skips and then speeds up to catch up…it’s very annoying. Some longer videos take FOREVER to load. When I use Safari I notice my connection resets itself often, so I get logged out of certain programs. How can I stop this?

I use WiFi. When I opened command prompt and looked at all my network connections there was more than 30 there. What can I do to minimize this? The thing is I don’t have any other programs running in the background and I’ve checked for viruses so that can’t be it.
HELP.

Answer by Fred
You can NOT have that many network connections. You are only using one, and there wil be a few additional sub connections shown. But if you have that many you really need to get someone to look at them a find out why you have so many and which ones you can stop. VERY dangerous to mess with them unless you REALLY understand what you are doing, or you can totally lose connection. This could also indicate the presence of spyware, so try downloading the free scanner from http://malwarebytes.org and run the full scan.

First, have you considered 3rd party software for your hardware router? check out dd-wrt or tomato (from Polar Cloud) if you haven’t. I know DD-WRT supports some type of VoIP and there might even be a VoIP distro.

If you have already looked at this option and want to turn a PC into a solution:

Modem- No. (very unlikely). Typically ISPs have to communicate with their own equipment to allow access. You might be able to mac address clone and get away with this but I really wouldn’t do that because you could get in trouble/banned from an ISP.

Router/WIFI/VoIP/Firewall/Server/Proxy/DNS/etc. – Absolutely.

Check out Trixbox (trixbox dot org), which is an Astrisk based PBX VoIP, router, firewall, etc solution. You can configure it to distribute local WiFi with a card you have installed in your PC; however, driver support is sketchy when it comes to anything that isn’t Linksys/D-Link/Netgear (namebrand) so if you have a very generic card, make sure it’s compatible first.

Also, check out M0n0Wall or really- just google Linux or BSD router solutions and you’ll get a lot of results an options.

In any case, you don’t need to be a pro to get these to work, but you should at least be a little familiar with Linux/BSD command line stuff.

Is there an equipment through which I could make a conference call, combining a VOIP line and a land line?

Question by Mary Ann: Is there an equipment through which I could make a conference call, combining a VOIP line and a land line?
I want to make a three way call using a VOIP service and a land line at the same time. Let’s say, I have a Vonage account and a line land; I want to use the VOIP signal to commute the land line with another land line, Thanks in advance for your answers.

Try connecting the phone lines with 2 .01 microfarad capacitors . 1 in each wire to provide audio isolation & prevent dc shorts.

I have a VOIP phone on a cable modem and have been experiencing static on my phone. What could be the causes?

Question by videsee: I have a VOIP phone on a cable modem and have been experiencing static on my phone. What could be the causes?
At times, there is absolutely no static and the call is fine. Other times the static stays for about 2 secs and repeats often. Could it be the batteries draining out? Could it be an issue with the VOIP equipment? Could it be the wireless phone interfering with something? Or could it be another reason?

Answer by Roger Vadim
well, this is the problem most of us have with VoIP…but don’t get discouraged….call your VIP provider…and troubleshoot the problem…

here is an example what I had to do to get it done right…..

your voip adapter to your network to avoid issues:

1. Connect voip adapter to a vacant port on your existing network router/switch

2. Give your adapter a static IP address from your router/switch. i.e. for a Linksys wrt54gs router, assign the adapter a static IP address of 192.168.1.130, gateway will be 192.168.1.1 (That’s the linksys IP address), subnet is 255.255.255.0 and the dns is whatever your isp uses. If you don’t know it, you can use a dns from level 3. e.g. 4.2.2.1

3. Now, go into your router and look for the DMZ setting. Turn this on, and input the static IP address of the adapter you just made. e.g. 192.168.1.130

4. For those of you who are a bit more knowledgable of networking and MUST use ports instead of the DMZ, the ports for Packet8 are dynamic. They are ever changing. You will need to forward ports UDP 5060-65534 and TCP 8889

5. If after using VoIP ( Broadband), you realize that their is some echo or possibly 1 way conversation, or possibly that you are losing internet connection to your adapter, go back into the router and turn OFF any firewall or SPI settings. If this doesn’t fix the problem, you might have to go back to factory defaults on the BPG510 and place it BEFORE your network router/switch. Placing a 310/410 adapter before the router is NOT an option

That is it. Now, the ports are all open to allow your adapter to work without any issues, HOPEFULLY. LOL!!!

Some notes: If using the BPG510 adapter, to make changes, connect a computer to it initially, and type in 192.168.88.1 then it will ask for a password. The password is “admin” without the quotes. Then change the WAN IP address to what it listed above as an example. You DON’T want to change the LAN IP address. Put in the static IP address in the range of your router like I suggested. When you connect it to the router and all is done, then a computer can be connected on a different port of the router, and still access the BPG510. Instead of the 192.168.88.1, it will be the new wan address you gave it. e.g. 192.168.1.130 . You still have the capability of connecting a computer directly to the lan port of the BPG510 and doing the 192.168.88.1 if you like.

If using the 310/410 adapters, there is no WAN settings. You would change the LAN settings for the IP address you want from your router.

Q&A: How exactly does the new messenger for the phone work? Can I hook up a phone straight from my computer?

Question by jrwhi1960: How exactly does the new messenger for the phone work? Can I hook up a phone straight from my computer?
Is there a way to hookup a phone straight from my computer?

Best answer:

Answer by Excellent Solutions
The phones are for internet calling, from companies like Yahoo, Skype, etc.

There are several ‘skype’ handsets available which plug into the USB. I have also seen a couple of phones that do both landline and internet.

Have a look on one the main online computer sellers ebuyer.com etc and type in VOIP (voice over IP)

Is there a box you can buy that plugs into your phone line and you could program to selectively screen calls?

Question by sandiegojoe420: Is there a box you can buy that plugs into your phone line and you could program to selectively screen calls?
I have not been able to find anything like this for the average consumer. I have seen high end PBX systems that will do it, but nothing small, simple and cheap. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

Comcast lets you program numbers that you want to turn away and it gives them a prompt saying the number you are calling is not accepting calls at this time.
