An Introduction to VoIP
VoIP or Voice-over IP refers to the communication of people between IP addresses over the Internet. It was first utilized in the year 1995 as a substitute for the telephone. It works by converting a voice signal into a digital signal. Then, it travels over the Internet as data.
Afterwards, it converts back into a voice signal to the other end. There are different ways to use VoIP. The first is to make use of a microphone plugged into the computer. You can also use a phone adapter or VoIP phone (the phone adapter refers to a device that converts your telephone signal so that it can be useful for VoIP calls). VoIP phones are the same with telephones, but they are mainly for VoIP calls. You can also use a regular telephone with VoIP.
VoIP is less costly compared to a regular telephone. This is because you use computers and the IP addresses, so there’s no longer a need for a telephone line to be installed. This will spare you time and money. The cost is the leverage of VoIP over regular telephones. You can save a lot on long distance calls. Because of the technology used, a long distance call costs the same as a local call. Businesses are also able to save a sizeable amount of money by using VoIP.
Because VoIP calls have to be converted into a digital signal and then back into a voice signal, there could be a slight time delay. Another disadvantage is that the voice quality may not be as clear as a regular telephone. But the technology is continually improving, and both these drawbacks are being enhanced.
The future is looking good for VoIP. More and more people seem to be taking interest in it (both personal and businesses) and this trend is not going to stop anytime soon. It may not have the same quality with a regular telephone, but it never ceases to improve.

Understanding VoIP
Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP refers to the transmission of voice information over IP-based networks or the Internet. It is the delivery of voice information which is in digital form, like fax, SMS, and/or voice-messaging applications, in separate packets rather than the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network. You can now make and receive voice calls if you have broadband Internet connection. The Internet Protocol or IP was originally meant for data networking. IP being a worldwide standard for data networking has made possible for its adaption to voice networking.
Other VoIP services will only let you call other people using the same service, but there are those that let you call everyone having a telephone number. VoIP will allow you to call straight from your computer, a special VoIP phone, or a regular phone connected to a special adapter. If the person on the other end has a standard analog phone, he or she is not required to have special tools to talk to you. Some VoIP services even let you speak to more than one person simultaneously.
You may come across other terms typically encountered and often used in the same way with VoIP, and those are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), and broadband phone.
You can make VoIP call with the help of the Internet. A lot of Internet connections are charged through flat monthly fee deals. Moreover, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long distance calls and that is the reason why people are all raves about it.

Voice over IP VPN Connections?

We’re currently running a VoIP telecommunications system using Avaya products. We are an organisation with multiple remote sites, which all need to be connected via VPN tunnels to ensure that they are able to communicate with one another for both voice and data. Currently we are using a system whereby each remote site is connected to every other remote site by a single VPN connection. This seems to be extremely inefficient, since we have literally between 10-15 VPN connections to every remote site. We’d like to change this by bringing all of our VoIP communications into a single location, namely our head office where the Avaya call server is located.
This would work by creating a single VPN connection between every location to our head office, eliminating the administrative nightmare that we’ve been experiencing. All of the remote networks are on varying subnets, with our head office actually being supernetted with a 255.255.252.0 subnet mask. The telephones at our head office are on a separate VLAN. It might also be worth mentioning that we are using a WatchGuard firewall to route traffic and manage the external VPN connections. What’s the best way to go about going from the dysfunctional system we have in place now, to adopting a ‘one to many’ topology that’s much more efficient?

To change your dysfunctional system you will have to do a trace and correct on each individual site starting with head office. This can be very time consuming and costly. It might be easier to delete and reinstall the lot. Do the head office then make an installation script of the 1st site config.. Then you just run the script at each site.

What is the difference between KVM, Voice over IP and logmein. Are they all use the same programming technique or they different ? Are they all use RAS too?

Four different things for four different purposes.
KVM stands for Keyboard, Video, Mouse. It refers to switches that allow a single keyboard, monitor and mouse setup to control multiple machines.
VOIP is a means of sending voice over IP networks.
Logmein is a commercial product for sharing documents, presentations, or a computer desktop across a network. It may optionally include voice or video features.
RAS (more correctly RRAS) is the Microsoft solution for remotely accessing network data through through a dial-up network or VPN connection.
