VLAN Explaination including VOIP

In computer networking, virtual local area network, virtual LAN or VLAN refers to a concept of dividing a physical network in order to come up with distinct broadcast domains.

This could be achieved on switch or router devices. Simpler devices only support partitioning on a port level, so sharing VLANs across devices would need running dedicated cabling for each VLAN.

More advanced devices can mark packets by means of tagging, so that a single interconnect could be used to transport data for various VLANs.
