Why People Are Raving About VoIP

By now, you may probably have heard about VoIP or Voice Over IP  from either your friends or family. And if you haven’t really paid attention, you might be wondering by now what it’s all about. And you get all the more curious when they claim how they benefit from it, and how they enjoy having the service, and how they ditched the conventional landline.

VoIP basically converts your voice conversation an analog signal  into a digital one. Then it is transmitted over the Internet through an IP or Internet Protocol network

How come it’s beneficial again? For starters, you can save a hell lote of money as compared to traditional phone service.  If you already have broadband internet access at home, you can just sign up with your service provider and make and receive unlimited calls, even long distance and internation ones, but still have a fixed monthly fee. This comes in handy especially when you have friends and family abroad.

Another remarkable feature it offers is that you can get a phone number that is not even  in your state. The catch there is that people you know from that  can call you at a local number so they won’t be charged long distance. This way, it’s not only you who can reap all the benefits. After all, sharing is caring!

Usually, major Voice Over IP VOIP Providers permits subscribers to have their current home phone numbers changed into a new VoIP account, given you have a special modem that connects to your broadband router. It may take a couple of weeks though. The quality of call can be greatly influenced by the speed of your Internet connection, so take is consideration.

However, you may have heard the issue about its incompatibilty with the 911 system. Fret not, it’s not aalways the case especially with major providers. You are only required to have your address registered with your Voice Over IP phone number in order for the 911 system to track your location in an event of an emergency.

I may not have mentioned other features that VoIP offers which you are looking for, so you have to check it out to see it for yourself!

VoIP Basic Tidbits

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is the transmission of voice information over IP-based networks or the Internet. It involves delivery of voice information in digital form, such as fax, SMS, and/or voice-messaging applications, in separate packets instead of the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network. You are able to make and receive voice calls just as long as you have broadband Internet connection. The main advantage of VoIP is the low cost since you can bid goodbye to high fees charged by ordinary telephone service.

The Internet Protocol or IP was originally used for data networking. The achievement of IP in being a worldwide standard for data networking has made possible for its adaption to voice networking.

Other VoIP services can only permit you to call other people using the same service, but some will let you call anyone who has a telephone number. VoIP lets you make a call straight from your computer, a special VoIP phone, or a regular phone connected to a special adapter. If the person on the other end has a standard analog phone, that person does not need any special tools to talk to you. Some VoIP services even let you speak to more than one person at a time.

Other terms frequently encountered and often used in the same way with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), and broadband phone.

VoIP calls are made through the use of Internet. Many Internet connections are charged via flat monthly fee deals. Additionally, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long distance calls and that is the reason why people are all raves about it.

To avail of the services of VoIP, you should at least have a broadband (high speed Internet) connection. This can be through a cable modem, or high speed services such as DSL or a local area network. A computer, adaptor, or specialized phone is necessary.
