Well I support VoIP phones where I work and I have to say most of our internet customers also have VoIP in the areas where it is available.

VoIP is eliminating the need for long distance charges and other minor fees that standard phone companies are charging. Now the drawback is for those who live in an area where the Internet signals are not the greatest, this causes their phone service to be down more often than not.

Also, a VoIP service isn’t 100% reliable as it depends on the internet to work, so if your cable or dsl service has an outage, say a fiber cable gets cut or a CMTS(for cable isp’s) goes down, than your phone goes out as well.

In the future, I see VoIP relatively unchanged except for becoming more available as well as more reliable, thus forcing standard phone companies to lower their rates as well to keep their existing customers, unfortunatly this is probably a long way down the road but we’re getting there.

Voice over IP – cellphone included or just at home? minimizing home call costs and cellphone costs?

Question by Independent_guy: Voice over IP – cellphone included or just at home? minimizing home call costs and cellphone costs?
How does it work – can I call for free (whether from home or my cellphone) using today’s technology or are we not there yet? Also, what cellphone should I buy if I do not want to commit to any cellphone company. Apparently most if not all cellphone are somehow “connected” to the service provider (as I was explained) so if you buy a cellphone you can only use it with the specific service provider. What if I want to buy a cellphone that can in the future work with any company I choose. Is this not an option? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by Rationality Personified
VoIP replaces your home phone line. It doesn’t include your cell phone (at least not yet).

If you want a cell phone that’s not committed to a particular cell phone company, get an “unlocked” cell phone. Even if it is unlocked, it will still only work within the bands and protocols of which it is capable. The most capable would be an unlocked quad-band GSM phone.

8×8 Packet8 Broadband VoIP Service with Adapter 410

8×8 Packet8 Broadband VoIP Service with Adapter 410

  • BPA410

8X8 Inc. (BPA410) Broadband Phone Adapter Packet8 is an affordable and easy-to-use broadband telephone and videophone service. Designed with both residential and business customers in mind, Packet8 allows anyone with broadband (high-speed) Internet access to use their regular phone to make unlimited calls to anywhere in the U.S. and Canada for as little as .95 per month. Packet8 subscribers with videophones can make video calls for as little as .95 per month. All Packet8 subscribers get world-wide unlimited calling to other Packet8 subscribers at no extra charge. Calls to non-Packet8 international numbers (outside the U.S. and Canada) are charged at a very low per minute rate.

By taking advantage of a technology called VoIP (voice over internet protocol), high-speed Internet connections and 8×8’s expertise in designing videophones, Packet8 is the complete voice and video communication service. Packet8 sends all calls to and from you through the broadband phone service adapter or the videophone which then route the calls over the Internet, instead of using the traditional public telephone network. There are no extra numbers to dial, no special instructions and no talking through your computer. Just pick up your phone, hear a dial tone and dial any phone number. Incoming calls ring your phone the same as any traditional phone.

To sum it up: with Packet8 you make and receive calls as you always have, but we route your calls more efficiently to save you money. Your phone call will have the same quality and your calling experience will be identical to what you have always had. Only your phone bill for local and long distance calling will be a lot less. And there’s NO EXTRA CHARGES for features like voicemail, caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling, or long-distance calls to anywhere in the U.S., Canada or to other Packet8 subscribers worldwide.

What do I need?

To start enjoying Packet8 broadband phone service, you need:

  • A broadband Internet connection such as cable or DSL
  • A home router that allows you to share your Internet connection with multiple computers or Internet devices. (Many home routers cost as little as .00 and take just minutes to set up.)
  • A Packet8 plan and some hardware (such as this broadband phone service adapter.)

Q&A: What is the best software for recording calls made with VoIP phones in an office?

Question by admodieus: What is the best software for recording calls made with VoIP phones in an office?
We have come across a situation where we would like to record some phone calls made in the workplace through our soft VoIP phones. Optimally, this software would be able to run on a computer connected to the same network without having to install anything on the server – however, I am not opposed to any solutions including the server.

Best answer:

Answer by bully
What solutions are you running for VoIP in the office?
Do you use a voice gateway? Is there a PBX server for your VoIP solution?

Additional – There are numerous suppliers of call recording solutions. I would suggest contacting your VoIP provider re-seller and getting a quote from them.

All the solutions will require software running on a server and a connection to your network. Depending on the solution the recording will need to have multiple network connections, one for admin and playback and one that will most likely use port spanning to sniff for the rtp (voice packet data) streams in your network where that spanning occurs will depend again on what you want to achieve. To record external calls, the spanning can be carried out at the voice gateway but if you also wish to record internal calls then further spanning will be required.

Sorry I can’t be any more precise but without detailed knowledge of your network and VoIP solution I can’t offer any further advice.
