What You Should Know About VoIP Phones

VoIP phones are the phones used with Voice over Internet Protocol technology. VoIP is the technology used to transmit audio as data or Packets over the Internet to either a computer user or to a landline telephone. VoIP is increasing in popularity, as it is highly valued for its great quality, low cost, and incredible features. VoIP is gaining respect, as a viable solution for business needs as well. VoIP will allow long distance calls for either free or for just pennies compared to traditional phone services.

There are many different ways to use VoIP. For some services you will need a computer, a high-speed Internet connection, an Instant Messaging program, speakers, a microphone, a phone adapter for converting standard telephones into VoIP phones, or a VoIP phone.

When using VoIP services, you can simply use a microphone and speakers to communicate with your caller. You need a High Speed Internet connection to allow for your calls to be in real time, and you will also need a soundboard and computer that is up to date with VoIP technology.

You can also use VoIP technology by using Instant Messaging services that have voice options enabled. These include Yahoo Messenger with Voice, ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, MSN, and even Google has started their own VoIP messenger. To use these VoIP messengers you will need a microphone and speakers connected to your computer.

VoIP phone adapters are another means of communicating with VoIP. A VoIP phone adapter will connect between your standard telephones, and your Internet modem. Your phone adapter will come with installation and user instructions. Generally, you will need to power off your computer, then connect the adapter to your Internet modem and then plug your telephone into the adapter’s phone jack. Power everything back up and you should be good to use your phone. You will need to make sure that you have VoIP service previously installed.

You can also purchase a VoIP phone, specifically designed for use with your VoIP service. VoIP phones come in both corded and cordless forms. VoIP corded phones come with many features. You can purchase a desktop phone that includes speakerphone, Call Waiting, Hold, Speed Dial, Transfer, and programmable keys such as Menu, Dial, Volume, Transfer, Cancel, and Headset or Speaker mode.

You can also purchase a 2 line VoIP corded telephone. Some of the features that come with a phone like this include Three Way Conferencing, phone to phone, or phone to PC, or phone to gateway direct dial. These phones are perfect for small businesses or for use in the home office.

Another popular choice in VoIP phones is the cordless VoIP phone. These cordless VoIP phones are not the same as VoIP wireless or VoWi FI phones. VoIP phones are similar to cordless standard phones. They will work in your house, but not outside, apart from your basic VoIP service.

There is another option and that is called VoWiFi. VoWiFi stands for Voice over Wireless Fidelity. This is the use of VoIP over a wireless connection. A VoWiFi phone operates by using a wireless network’s access point. The advantages of using VoWiFi, is that you can easily pick up network signals or “hotspots” for free. However, VoWiFi will not work if it is out of a wireless range, and immediately you will be terminated from your call. If you have a wireless network that you are local to, you will find VoWiFi to be a great advantage and extremely cost effective.

Because of issues with network connectivity, there are Hybrid phones available. A hybrid is a cross between a cellular phone and VoWiFi. A Hybrid will place your call when you are in your cellular network range, and then, to prevent roaming charges, can pick up free VoWiFi by entering a hotspot. This is a great combination of two technologies and time will tell where the hybrid phone will evolve in the future.

One thing is certain; VoIP is an advancement in telecommunications that is here to stay. Whether you use your computer, and Internet Messaging program, a VoIP phone adapter, VoIP cordless or corded phones, VoWiFi or Hybrids the future points to VoIP as the telecommunication method of choice.

Does VOIP (voice over IP) interfere with your internet connection (download/upload speeds)?

Question by xbadwolfx: Does VOIP (voice over IP) interfere with your internet connection (download/upload speeds)?

Best answer:

Answer by Jim Maryland
Technically it does, but only minimally for typical broadband users. I used to have SunRocket (before they closed down) and I seem to recall that it only needed up to 80Kbps max for bandwidth. Given most offerings are in the Mbps, a few Kbps is not normally going to be noticed.

Internet VoIP Phones – the Updated Technology

VoIP, better known as Voice over Internet Protocol is a protocol optimised for the transmission of voice through the internet or other packet switched networks. VoIP is often used abstractly to refer to the actual transmission of voice. It is most commonly known as IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband.

The companies that generally provide VoIP services are commonly referred to as providers, and protocols which are used to carry voice signals over the IP network are commonly referred to as Voice over IP or VoIP protocols. Voice over IP protocols carry telephony signals in the shape of digital audio, typically reduced in data rate using speech data compression techniques, encapsulated in a data packet stream over IP. There exist two types of PSTN to VoIP services. Direct Inward Dialing (DID) and access numbers. DID supports in connecting the caller directly to the VoIP user while access numbers need the caller to input the extension number of the VoIP user.

VoIP has succeeded in grabbing the attention with much facilitated tasks and by providing services that may be more difficult to implement or expensive using the more traditional PSTN. Conventional phones are connected directly to telephone company phone lines and are kept functioning with the help of back-up generators or batteries located at the telephone exchange that in the event of power failures. Generally, household VoIP hardware uses broadband modems and other equipment powered by household electricity that could be subject to interruptions in the absence of an uninterruptible power supply or generator.

The support of sending faxes over VoIP is still limited. The existing voice codecs are not designed in a suitable way for fax transmission. The efforts to solve this are underway by defining an alternate IP-based solution for delivering Fax-over-IP, namely the T.38 protocol. Another possible solution to overcome the drawback is to treat the fax system as a message switching system which does not need real time data transmission – such as sending a fax as an email attachment or a remote printout.

Guide to Voip

VoIP is Voice over Internet Protocol. Standard telephone lines are referred to as PSTN or the Public Switched Telephone Network. PSTN works on circuit switching. A good example of circuit switching is the old switchboard operator who would connect callers to receivers by the use of electrical circuits. VoIP is Packet Switching. Packet Switching consists of data packets, or packets of information being carried across the Internet, from your computer to either another computer or PSTN telephone.
VoIP operates in different forms. For instance, you can use VoIP when you use an Instant Messaging program with voice on your computer. These are very popular and now Yahoo, AOL, MSN, ICQ, and even Google have VoIP Instant Messaging programs. The benefits of these programs are that they are free to download off of the Internet, and by using a microphone and your speakers; you can talk over the Internet with any of your buddies. As long as your friends and family members download the same program, you will be able to talk with them as long as you like, and absolutely free. You can talk to anyone, anywhere in the world with VoIP Instant Messengers.
Another method of VoIP technology is to use a VoIP service provider for your basic telephony needs. A very familiar company is Vonage. For a monthly fee, you will receive VoIP services, the same as you pay for your regular telephone services. You can choose to use your VoIP service over the Internet, or you can choose to connect your VoIP to your standard telephone. By connecting a VoIP phone adapter to your modem and standard phone, you will be able to use your VoIP service and your telephone as you would with any other telephone service provider.

Many people prefer to use a VoIP service provider because the cost of local and long distance calling with VoIP is very inexpensive. Many providers offer unlimited calling plans. There are other features that are often bundled with your service plan. Features such as Voicemail, Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Transfer, and 3 Way Calling are often included for free in your selected VoIP plan. By choosing your VoIP service provide and installing a phone adapter, you will be on your way to making low cost VoIP calls in minutes.
You can also purchase a specialized VoIP phone. These phones come in both cordless and corded styles. The cordless VoIP phones work the same as standard cordless phones.

Many of these phones also come with conferencing features and are suitable for small or home business needs.

Another form of VoIP telephones are the VoWiFi phones. These are wireless VoIP phones. This is the same technology as VoIP, only you are not limited to a plugged in connection. You can use your VoWiFi phone wherever there is a wireless High Speed Internet Connection. These phones are more expensive then mobile phones, and haven’t had all of the kinks worked out yet. However, they are still a cost effective choice for those who would like to save a little money.
VoIP has proved to be a viable source of telecommunications. Many companies are now offering VoIP services and those who aren’t have plans to do so. Companies such as Verizon and Sprint offer VoIP services. Other companies are working on creating VoIP phones and VoWiFi phones.
There are Hybrid phones on the market, which allow for both VoWiFi and Cellular calling. These phones have many people excited. They can work in a network range as a cellular phone, and then, they can work as a VoWiFi phone, avoiding all roaming charges.
The FCC has issued some regulations regarding VoIP and the ability to call 911. Because VoIP uses the Internet and not a landline phone, when a call is made to 911 from a VoIP connection, the operator who receives the call receives none of the caller’s pertinent information. This includes address or location of the call. Some service providers do not supply 911 at all; others have what is known as Enhanced 911 services. To use these services you may need to activate your service, as well as register your information with 911. However, you will need to sign a statement when you apply for your VoIP services stating that you understand your 911 capabilities may be limited.

Internet Calls: Voip technology for cheap calling

For those who may not be aware, the latest technology to revolutionize the world of communication is VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). Internet calls based on VoIP are routed over the IP networks and users can avail a host of value-added features without having to spend much. With the ushering in of a free market economy and large scale liberalization, communication has become increasing critical.

Today, people are required to make far too many calls to people within their own country and in countries across the globe. Calling over Internet has proved to be the best solution to avoid exorbitant monthly telephone bills, as Internet calls can save up to 40 to 60 percent when compared with PSTN services.

The voice over or IP or Internet telephony solutions is steadily gained in popularity as all those who were worried about bills and limiting their calls are now frequently making long-distance and international calls for free or by paying very less. The reasons behind this upsurge in Internet telephony is both for its low cost and easy use. As calls over the Internet drastically reduces the communication expenses, many individuals and business enterprises are opting for this system worldwide.

To make Internet calls one needs a high speed Internet connection, a computer, a sound card, speakers, head set with a microphone and special software used for setting up an Internet phone connection. However, if you want, the service provider of VoIP will provide you an adapter which will be connected to the traditional telephone or the broadband modem and it will be turned into a VoIP phone.

To make calls using VOIP technology, the headphones are plugged into the computer and both the caller and called parties need to be present online at the same time. Popularity of making calls over Internet has led many users to switch to VoIP services. If you are interested in trying VoIP, then you should check out some of the free VoIP software available on the Internet. You should be able to download and set it up in about three to five minutes. The reasons for people opting for Internet telephony are many:

The users can make international calls free or paying very little – leading to a significant saving in their monthly telephone bills. It is reported that by switching over to Internet telephony, the users can save around 40 to 60 percent each month on their phone bill. When using VOIP technology, if you are making calls PC to PC, it will be completely free of cost whereas while making calls to landlines or mobiles, it will entail some low cost. Because of this advanced technology, the users can share the data, video, images and text with their recipients. The Internet calling provides unified communication with others as it is backed with packet switching technique. Unlike traditional PSTN services, the Internet telephony offers value added calling features including voice mail, caller ID, call conferencing, call waiting and call forwarding. The service providers offer users cheap calling rates than the normal telephone calls. The facilities include unlimited PC to phone calling, PC to PC and so on. Internet calls also improve productivity as it ensures excellent voice quality without any latency.
