Andrea McCormick Asked: What is voice over internet telephone service?

And how would you know if you have it?

Your analog signal is converted to a digital signal and routed over the internet using your cable or dsl modem.

Hm Answered:
Voice over Internet Protocol (Voice over IP, VoIP) is one of a family of internet technologies, communication protocols, and transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet. Other terms frequently encountered and often used synonymously with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Internet telephony refers to communications services such as voice, fax, SMS, and/or voice-messaging applications that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN).

The steps involved in originating a VoIP telephone call are signaling and media channel setup, digitization of the analog voice signal, encoding, packetization, and transmission as Internet Protocol (IP) packets over a packet-switched network. On the receiving side, similar steps (usually in the reverse order) such as reception of the IP packets, decoding of the packets and digital-to-analog conversion reproduce the original voice stream.[1]

Even though IP Telephony and VoIP are terms that are used interchangeably, they are actually different; IP telephony has to do with digital telephony systems that use IP protocols for voice communication while VoIP is actually a subset of IP Telephony. VoIP is a technology used by IP telephony as a means of transporting phone calls.[2]

VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. The codec used is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs.

There are three types of VoIP tools that are commonly used; IP Phones,Software VoIP and Mobile and Integrated VoIP. The IP Phones are the most institutionally established but still the least obvious of the VoIP tools. The use of software VoIP has increased during the global recession as many persons, looking for ways to cut costs have turned to these tools for free or inexpensive calling or video conferencing applications.[citation needed] Software VoIP can be further broken down into three classes or subcategories; Web Calling, Voice and Video Instant Messaging and Web Conferencing. Mobile and Integrated VoIP is just another example of the adaptability of VoIP. VoIP is available on many smartphones and internet devices so even the users of portable devices that are not phones can still make calls or send SMS text messages over 3G or WIFI.[3]

Robert Gray Answered:
VOIP –> Your calls are routed over the public Internet.

You either have a “real” phone line or you have a phone system that runs over the Internet. It is difficult to tell without knowing your provider. Comcast provides VOIP, for example.

Tips to Choose Hosted VOIP Service Provider

Voice Over Internet Protocol — VOIP is gaining popularity for long-distance communications, a cheaper alternate to phone calls. Using hosted VOIP solutions can cut your pone bills by 80%. This saving is in fact much more than what you will need to pay as one time installation cost initially. There are many VoIP service providers on the line and selecting right one is a matter of consideration. Besides they have so many options to choose from that it is not impossible that you end up paying for a wrong product. Here are some tips to help you on that front.

Requirement Analysis — You need to assess your exact requirement first. In fact you need to know if you really need to use hosted VoIP or not. You can know that by confirming if you really make too many long-distance calls. The VoIP might not prove a good decision if you do not have to make global calls on frequent basis. This is good for those who have contacts across borders and need to talk to them. If more than 50% of your traditional bills is spent on long-distance call, VoIP can help you cut that down to 10%. You can compare the charges on local calls and on that VoIP.

Customer Care — Don’t just jump for lowest priced hosted VOIP offer. It might cost you more later. The reason is the service providers who sell cheap products, often fail to provide after-sales services. They do succeed in attracting a lot of business, in fact as much as they can’t handle at all and customers suffer. So you need to make sure that you are contacting a reputed service provider. You can take counsel of your friends or clients before opting for one.

Customization — There may be several packages on the roll. Some might sound you very cheap, and some exorbitant, so let that not be the only criterion of selection. Check out the services they are offering with each packages and if you really need them. For example you should know if you will want to have a call-waiting option in your package, if you would like to have 3 way calling system, or if you really need to have fax facility in your package. So the package value will vary accordingly. Pick only what you really need, but make sure that you are not missing one which you really need.

Phone Number — Before you select a hosted VoIP plan, you need to make sure if the company allows you to keep your old number. Many companies do let you keep your old phone number, but many may not allow that feature. For those who have already distributed their contact numbers to several new, old and prospective clients can not afford to change it. Specially those who are running home business which entirely depend on their phone number only. You can’t risk losing customers for a VoIP. Certainly not. So make sure to choose one which let you keep your old number/s.

Emergency Services — Many VOIP allows emergency services or not. Many do, but many don’t. So there is no use lamenting on it later. Make sure it before you sign up.

Voice Over Internet Protocol

Voice Over Internet Protocol

Voice Over Internet Protocol is a special type of communication protocol for transmission and reception of voice and multimedia signals through the internet protocol networks. This technology is also known as Internet Telephony, Voice Over Broadband, IP Telephony, Broadband Telephony. In VoIP, voice, fax, multimedia and voice messaging applications are transmitted and received over through internet. For smooth communication over VoIP, efficient network support is must.

The process of VoIP communication begins with making a VoIP telephone call. The first step in making a VoIP telephone call is setting up media channel. Then analog voice signal digitization, encoding, packetization and transmission follow. The same steps are carried out in the reverse order on the receiving side. The entire process is carried out by different types of computers and modems. So proper IT support is prerequisite for setting up VoIP communication. It ensures that computers and modems function properly.

Special session protocols are used by VoIP systems to control the setup. Audio CODECs are used for encoding speech. Various types of CODECs are used for different implementations of VoIP. In some implementations narrow band CODECs are used while in some other high fidelity stereo CODECs are preferred. Maintaining CODECs in good health is the responsibility of network support provider.

Generally 3 types of VoIP tools are popular in the market. Those 3 VoIP tools are Hosted VoIP, Home VoIP, Hybrid VoIP. As the name suggests Hosted VoIP is meant for business organizations while Home VoIP tool has been designed for home users. Hybrid VoIP tool has been designed for the organizations which want to continue with existing non-VoIP phone systems but also want to reap the benefits of VoIP.

VoIP could be implemented using various technologies, such as IP Multimedia Subsystem,Media Gateway Control Protocol,Session Initiation Protocol,Real Time Transport Protocol,Session Description Protocol.

VoIP has gone through lot of modifications for marketing purposes. It now employs broadband internet access, using which the subscribers can make and receive calls. VoIP service providers now support both inbound and outbound services with direct inbound dialing. Obviously a strong network support should be in place to provide that kind of service. Many service providers proffer unlimited local calling for a flat subscription fee.

To avail of the VoIP service, a VoIP device should be connected to the network of a VoIP service provider. This could be done in several ways. The first way of doing this is to connect a dedicated VoIP phone to the IP network using Ethernet card or wireless Wi-Fi. Another way is to use an analog telephone adapter which links to the network using special hardware and firmware. The third and last way is to employ a softphone. Softphone is an application software installed on a network computer with microphone and speaker. To install Softphone on a computer, the help of an IT support provider could be taken.

The VoIP service is economically feasible for common users because it cuts down the infrastructure and communication costs drastically. Separate voice and data networks are not required for VoIP service. One network could be utilized for both purposes. Caller ID, conference calling, call forwarding and automatic redialing features come with no extra cost.

Samsung Nexus S – How to Set Up Nexus S for Internet Calling

Samsung Google Nexus S i9023- SIM Free I owned a HTC Wildfire as I was out of budget at that time to buy a HTC Desire. Last few months I was on the watch to either buy an Apple or an Android phone. Finally I chose GOOGLE NEXUS S and it has lived to my expectations. Here are some of the criteria I had used for choosing this phone which have not been proved wrong: 1. Display is excellent and comparable to HTC Desire, though there is a argument that it is slightly inferior to IPhone 4. But for my eye, I couldn’t barely any difference. 2. It runs on GINGERBREAD (Android v2.3), big plus – it is much faster and has more code fixes. It is far better than Android v2.1/2.2 that I had for Wildfire. It supports Near Field Communications and built in VOIP calling functionality — which doesn’t interest me that much, as I don’t intend to use any of those. 3. It is a pure GOOGLE ANDROID phone, meaning you get the updates first than anyone. Frankly, I find this a great privilege. 4. The hardware (RAM, Processor) is no lesser than HTC Desire/IPhone. 5. It is a SAMSUNG product, which has delivered two successful ANDROID products recently – GALAXY,WAVE. 6. REAR & FRONT CAMERAs which lack in HTC products. 7. Always UNLOCKED – which means I don’t have serious worries in changing network I found one silly disadvantage of this phone over HTC – This phone doesn’t have LED notifications which I found very useful in HTC. Those notifications always notified me if I was out of <b>…</b>

How to receive incoming calls?

hmanton Asked: How to receive incoming calls?

I recently switched to VoIPo, a VoIP home phone service and I am having trouble receiving incoming calls. When I call my home phone number through my cell phone, my cell phone will ring and ring but the home phone will not do anything, no ringing and when I pick up the home phone, a dial tone comes on as it is not receiving the call at all. Help please!

joe r Answered:
did you recently port your phone number? it can take several days to several weeks for your number to be completely ported over..

during the porting process your outgoing caller ID on your new phone line will show your number, but your incoming calls would still be going to your old carrier, in which case you would need to get the temporary number from your current provider to forward your phone service from your old (current) provider to..

Jeff Answered:
That’s pretty typical, a timing issue with getting the new VOIPO service and when your previous land-line carrier releases the phone number.  Another way to test is if someone who already has VOIPO calls your number, odds are your VoIP home service line will ring because the call is completely internally routed properly.

How to use computer as phone?

Dsi Cartuchos Asked: How to use computer as phone?

I have a computer, and about fifteen inches from it, there is a phone jack in the wall with a phone already connected to it. I want to disconnect the phone and connect the land-line cable to my computer and use it as a phone. Optimally, I would also like to take the phone and connect that to my computer simultaneously so I can answer a call using either the computer or the phone. once again, no VOIP!

I have a PCI modem card that I can install and use. I just want to know what kind of software I need to have.

Answers:

John Blown Answered:
You can use PC as a headset for your mobile phone via Bluetooth, and you can use your cell phone to control your computer as well.
Corvato Answered:
your computer’s modem has to have voice functionality
MOST don’t.

if it does, windows and the software with the modem will let it work for you.

Replacement for Home Land Line?

bennie Asked: Replacement for Home Land Line?

I’m in southern Indiana (USA). I have Vonage service for $20/month, which is pretty cheap, but I’m thinking I can do better. In our household we have 3 cell phones and the VOIP service. The only reason we have the VOIP is that many people know that number for us.

So, I want telephone service which is either a free or very cheap for incoming calls, and will allow me to transfer my existing number into the service. I don’t care at all about outgoing calls or international calls. My preference would be all calls go directly to a voice mail service and then receive a text message with the message transcribed and an e-mail with a wav file attachment.

Anybody know of any services like this?

Answers:

Matthew L Answered:
what you can do is get a basic landline phone from the telephone company AT&T for about $16…or get the magic jack which IS a landline for only $20/year…number or not, you can just update everyone of what your new number is and have it forwarded to your cell phone through a free service like GOOGLE’s PHONE service…anyone who calls you at that number can have that call forwarded to your cellphone and save yourself the $20/month.In actuality, even landline phones are going up in prices, although they are the most reliable.Otherwise what you can really do is work it out with even GOOGLE to “port” your number over.Your phone number just needs to be “ported” over from another provider, since AT&T had to make ALL phone numbers available to all providers instead of having a monopoly over it…if not, you can go with MAGIC JACK and ask them about porting a number over.

Jeff Answered:
Try VOIPO.  It’s a great service wherever you are in the U.S.  At $149 for 2 years it’s a much better price.  Even after you add in the FCC fees and taxes it’s still about $7.70 per month, much less than the $20 you’re paying now.  And it comes with caller ID, call waiting, and a couple dozen other extras.

A Few Ways To Enhancing Your VoIP System

There are lots of benefits to using VOIP – it’s not just that it allows us to talk at a distance you’ll find it works out in a commercial sense very viable. But, like various other systems VoIP can have disadvantages obviously, we’re hoping to cover these disadvantages so that you have a little understanding about them and to offer you some tips on how to improve the quality of your service for your VOIP system.

Now probably the most common disadvantages of VoIP is that if your net connection fails, so does your telephone connection. This could leave you in the scenario where you are unable to communicate with customers, clients or close friends. There are lots of things which you can do to counter act this kind of issue, generally it comes down to having a redundant interconnection that can switch in immediately. There are lots of handsets you can buy in the marketplace that will automatically switch to cell phone capabilities if there were issues with Web connectivity or if it should drop.

The benefits of this system are totally obvious – provided that your internet link (and VoIP) operate, your cell phone system lies dormant, however the moment they go down the cellular service takes over so you stay in contact with your important contacts. Be careful about the mobile service that you select – pick one without a lot of default costs, but rather select one which will barely cost you anything at all providing you don’t use it much – which, of course, is what you’ll be doing.

It’s also possible to have a second Internet connection as a back-up, this can essentially become your redundant system if your main Internet connection drops, you’ll want to make sure that you use separate companies for this service and there’s no connection to your primary supplier. When your primary link goes down, hopefully youll have the redundant link working and so will still be able to operate.

There exists yet another little disadvantage with regards to voice over ip and that’s when your calling 911. When you dial 911 dispatcher can usually see your number with something known as caller line identification (CLI) if you are using voice over internet protocol this is an hidden. Undoubtedly, if it is an emergency this is probably not really an issue. The fascinating thing is that you have to take action and make an online sign up with the phone number, justice is done when you call the emergency services the dispatcher will see your location instantly.

There could even be a problem on large networks with the good quality. There are ways obviously to prioritize voice traffic on the router and data traffic so this will help combat any declines in quality and ensure any time telephone calls are being placed that the voice traffic is getting top priority on your Internet connection.

Looking to increase bandwidth can also help you with this particular scenario. Actually, there’s a drop in good quality once your VoIP connection doesn’t have adequate internet bandwidth to support it, which can occur even on one connection – the only real possible answer, if you have problems with quality, is to increase your internet connection so that it has the bandwidth to support your VoIP systems. Remember, VoIP systems are really a feature of the internet age, so even though the system may have disadvantages today, it is the subject of intense research and continuous improvement, and will certainly be a central communications system in the years to come.
