VoIP Tidbits

Voice over Internet Protocol or VoIP is one of the leading technology advancement today used in telecommunications. And it’s gaining more and more popularity by the minute, but there are still some people who don’t even have a single clue about it.

For starters, VoIP involves delivery of voice information over IP-based networks or the Internet. It transmits voice information in digital form by means of separate packets instead of the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network. It allows you to make and receive voice calls with the use of a broadband Internet connection rather than the conventional landline phones. One of the main reasons people are raving about it is because of its cost-efficiency. VoIP steers clear of the huge amounts of fees that the regular phone lines charge.

The Internet Protocol or IP was originally built for data networking. The achievement of IP in being a worldwide standard for data networking has made it possible for its adaptation to voice networking.

There are VoIP services that only let you call other people using the same service, but there are some that permit you to call just about anyone who owns a telephone number, be it local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers.

Another astonishing thing about VoIP is that it lets you make a call just by using a computer, a special VoIP phone, or a customary phone connected to a special adapter. If the person on the other end is utilizing a standard analog phone, that person need not have any special equipment just to be able to talk to you. Some VoIP services even allow call conferencing or speaking with multiple persons at a time.

Other terms that can also refer to VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone.

Majority of Internet connections are charged using a flat monthly fee arrangement, this is a great thing for VoIP as it can put calls across using the Internet. Using the Internet connection for both data traffic and voice calls enable the clients to steer clear of shocking monthly bills. Additionally, VoIP plans do not charge a per-minute fee for long distance, cost-efficient in the truest sense of the word!
